Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews from the Mea Shearim quarter blocked busy intersections and stoned cars and other vehicles yesterday on roads that are normally open to traffic on the Sabbath. Police and security forces intervened to disperse the religious zealots. More than 20 demonstrators were arrested and scores of stone-throwers, drivers and policemen were reported injured.
The latest outbreak of religious violence occurred in the Romema quarter of the city which houses the national television studios, the Jerusalem Post, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the Biblical Zoo and the Tnuva dairies. It borders an Ultra-Orthodox neighborhood. Last Saturday, hundreds of zealots converged on the convention hall parking lot to stone buses and their passengers preparing to leave for a peace demonstration in Tel Aviv. Mea Shearim leaders had promised police at that time that they would curb their followers.
