Jewish Group Awards Peruvian Writer

The Human Rights Award of the Latin American Jewish Congress was presented to Mario Vargas Llosa, a noted Peruvian writer who is president of the International PEN Club, at a ceremony at the Great Synagogue of Lima, organized by the Peruvian Jewish Association. The event was attended by diplomats, leading personalities of the Peruvian political, cultural, artistic and scientific areas, Jewish community leaders and the general public.

The award, a parchment scroll, was presented to Vargas Llosa by Gregorio Faigon, president of the Latin American Jewish Congress, who made a special trip from Buenos Aires to Lima for the presentation. Vargas Llosa, who also received a silver plate from Dr. Jacobo Kapilivsky, president of the Peruvian Jewish Association, delivered the keynote address in which he discussed the meaning of human rights.
