The recent “anti-dissident trials” in the Soviet Union have been cited by the Executive Council of the Canadian Labor Congress (CLC) in a resolution “firmly discouraging” all further exchange visits with Soviet trade unions, according to Denis McDermott, CLC president.
In the resolution, the Executive Council noted “the fundamental differences in approach to human and trade union rights between the CLC and the Soviet Union All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions (AUCCTU), as exemplified by the recent anti-dissident trials in the Soviet Union and the harassment of the Free Trade Union Association of Workers of the Soviet Union,” and said it was “forced to suspend indefinitely the exchange programs with the AUCCTU.”
“Therefore, the Executive Council firmly discourages affiliates of the Congress from accepting, until such time as the human and trade union rights situation makes it possible for them to enjoy frank and positive exchanges with their Soviet counterparts, any invitations to visit the Soviet Union,” the resolution stated.
