An Israeli economic mission visited the People’s Republic of China secretly during March, Haaretz revealed today, The paper’s reliable military correspondent, Zeev Schiff, said the delegation discussed projects and Israeli products which if thought might interest the Chinese. There were no immediate results, the paper reported. But the hope is that once the peace with Egypt “takes hold,” the Chinese will see fit to thaw their cold relations with Israel.
The Israeli delegation was flown to China aboard the private business jet of millionaire businessman Shaul Eisenberg, who has major interests in the Far East and was the go between in arranging the mission. The plane left Ben Gurion Airport under conditions of secrecy and flew to China with one stopover. The Israeli team remained in China for a “short time,” Haaretz said. Official sources would neither confirm nor deny the report.
