The American Jewish Committee has filed a formal complaint with the Labor Department’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, charging AMF Inc., a worldwide producer of leisure time and industrial products, with “executive suite” discrimination against Jews. The complaint alleged that the company was “insensitive to attracting and promoting Jewish personnel on merit,” had no affirmative action program and was generally uncooperative.
The complaint was filed through the AJCommittee’s New York Regional Task Force on Executive Suite in conjunction with the Federation Employment and Guidance Service. In a letter to Weldon J. Rougeou, director of the Office of Federal Contract Compliance, George Karp, Task Force chairman, said it has sought to discuss the paucity of Jews on the executive level in AMF with leaders of the corporation for the past seven years. But the Task Force found it “exceedingly difficult to make contact and adequately discuss the reasons for the existing situation” Karp’s letter said. He added, “We are deeply disturbed both at the attitude and Jack of cooperation by AMF Incorporated.” But he also noted that there was no record of any governmental agency ever having conducted a review of AMF in the Affirmative Action Contract Compliance Program for governmental contractors.
