Members of the Security Council held informal consultations today on a Tunisian draft resolution calling for the establishment of an “independent state in Palestine” for the Palestinian people. The consultations were in preparation for continuing the debate on Palestinian rights which started at the beginning of the month and then adjourned without voting on a resolution.
The Tunisian resolution, which was circulated today among the Council members, also affirms the right of the Palestinian refugees to choose between peaceful repatriation and equitable compensation for their property and says that Israel should withdraw from all the Arab territories occupied since June, 1967, “including Jerusalem.”
At the same time, the draft calls for arrangements to guarantee the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of all states in the area and the right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries.
According to sources here, the resolution is certain to be vetoed by the United States which is on record in opposition to an independent Palestinian state. In case of a veto, the sources said, the Arabs plan to call for an emergency session of the General Assembly to discuss Palestinian rights.
