Abraham Dwek, president of the Committee for the Rescue of Syrian Jewry, called today on President Carter and United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim to intervene on behalf of Syrian Jews in the face of recent cases of harassment of Jews in Damascus and Aleppo.

In a telegram sent yesterday to Waldheim and Carter as well as Secretary of State Edmund Muskie, Dwek said that Jewish women were raped “by Syrian security forces” in Aleppo and “in Damascus, a Jew has been shot and seriously wounded by militant Muslims.”

“We urgently appeal to you to request President (Hafez) Assad (of Syria) in the name of humanity to prevent such outrageous acts against hapless people, by facilitating the evacuation of 5000 Syrian Jews to the United States,” Dwek wrote.
