The “Para-Olympics,” a series of sports events for handicapped persons, opened in Amhem Saturday with the participation of a 60-member team from Israel, one of the largest, among the 42 countries competing. The events include basketball, volley ball, swimming, table tennis, sharpshooting, weight-lifting and gymnastics. One of the volley ball matches is between Israel and Egypt. The “Para-Olympics” were conceived by Sir Ludwig Gutmann who arrived in England in 1939 as a German-Jewish refugee and in 1948 established the first sports events for handicapped persons there.
