Efforts are being made to establish contact with a hitherto unknown tribe of Jews living in a remote region of North Yemen close to the Saudi Arabian border. According to Mordechai Ben Porat, a former MK who heads the World Organization of Jews from Arab Countries, the tribe was discovered only recently and is believed to number about 2000 persons. Ben Porat said that until now, only a few hundred Jews were believed to dwell in that isolated part of the Arabian peninsula, mainly gold and silversmiths, artisans and weavers. He said there are presently some 35,000 Jews living in various Arab countries.
