Israel’s reply to Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s call for a Comp David-style summit conference after the U.S. Presidential elections was delivered to Egyptian officials today.
David Kimche, director general of the Foreign Ministry, in delivering the letter by Premier Menachem Begin to Egyptian Ambassador Sood Mortoda, expressed regrets that Egypt had suspended the autonomy talks for the fourth time He said Israel believed there was no justification for such a step. Begin’s letter was later handed to Egyptian Deputy Foreign Minister Butros Ghali in Cairo by Israeli Ambassador Eliahu Ben Ekissar.
Meanwhile, Sodat announced today that he would write no more letters to Begin since Egypt “had clarified” its position in his earlier letters to Begin. The exchange of letters began Aug. 3 when Egypt announced a suspension of what was to be renewed autonomy talks, already suspended since last May.
