Municipal officials here announced that Graham Greene, the British author, has been named the recipient of the Jerusalem Prize for 1981. The award, presented every two years, honors authors whose works deal with “the freedom of the individual in society.”
Greene is best known for his novels “The Confidential Agent” (1939), “The Power and the Glory” (1940), “The Ministry of Fear” (1943), “The Heart of the Matter” (1948), “The End of the Affair” (1951), “The Quiet American” (1955), and “Our Man in Havana” (1958).
He is expected to go to Jerusalem next April to receive the award from Mayor Teddy Kollek. The prize includes a plaque and a cash award. Previous winners include Simone de Beauvoir, Bertrand Russell and Jorge Luis Borges.
