— More than 20,000 Jewish students are enrolled in 68 Hebrew schools in Argentina, according to Dr. Eliezer Tavin, head of the Education and Culture Department in the Diaspora of the World Zionist Organization, who has recently returned from a visit to Argentina and other South American countries.
In an interview in the Passover issue of Olam Hodash, the only Hebrew magazine for children and young adults published in the United States, Tavin said that in addition to general studies the Jewish students in Argentina’s Hebrew schools are also taught Hebrew language and literature, Jewish history and Bible. Presently there are 300,000 Jews in Argentina.
Tavin said that in the Jewish Institute for Teachers in Buenos Aires, named after the late Israeli President Zalman Shazar, and the Agnon seminary for kindergarten teachers, there are presently 300 students.
“We believe that teachers who were born in the country can influence the parents and their children and therefore increase the number of Jewish students in Argentina’s Hebrew schools,” Tavin told Asher Wolk, the editor of Olam Hadash.
