— The Labor Party’s Central Committee has allowed its veteran leaders who have been elected to two or more terms in the Knesset to run again in the June 30 elections. Over 1,000 of the committee’s 1,100 members attended the meeting last Thursday and cast their secret ballots.
Under new party rules, members who have already served more than two terms must receive a vote of at least 60 percent of committee members present, before their names can be considered for the list of candidates for election or re-election. The 10 concerned included some of the best known names in the Labor Party. All passed the test, by percentages ranging from 71 to 88 percent.
There were Abba Eban, Yitzhak Rabin, Gad Yacobi, Moshe Shahal, Yossi Sarid, Ora Namin, Admi Amorai, Misha Harish, Shlomo Hillel and Shoshana Arbeli-Asmolino. The latter two tied for top place, with 82 percent. None of the names had been in doubt, apart from Sarid who is considered by many party members to be an “extreme dove.”
