Several Syrian ground-to-air missiles were fired at Israeli planes which were on a routine reconnaissance flight over the Beka valley in Lebanon this afternoon but failed to hit the aircraft, an Israeli army spokes-man said. He reported that the missiles were apparently fired from a site just inside Syria close to the Lebanese border. All the Israeli planes returned safely to their base.

The spokesman had earlier said he had no information about reports quoting eyewitnesses that missiles had also been fired at Israeli aircraft this morning. Well informed sources said there was no truth to the report, which was first broad-cast on radio in Beirut and carried by foreign news agencies. No details were disclosed about the type of missiles that were fired at Israeli air-craft this afternoon.
