Israel’s defense establishment, after months of deliberation, has decided to equip Israel’s second generation jet fighter plane, the Lavie, with American-made Pratt & Whitney FV-1120 engines. According to the newspaper Haaretz, original plans called for use of General Electric F-404 engines.

Both American companies were invited to bid for the plane’s power plant and both agreed to order work from Israeli factories in return for the contract. The Pratt & Whitney engine is more expensive than the GE but larger and more powerful.
