Tel Aviv (Jul. 14)
Israeli Air Force planes today shot down a Syrian aircraft in a short dogfight over south Lebanon, an army spokesman said. He said that Israeli aircraft were attacking terrorist bases south of Beirut when Syrian fighters tried to intercept them. In the ensuing dogfight one of the Syrian planes was downed, while all Israeli aircraft returned safely to base, he said.
The targets for today’s attack were said to be in the Damour area some 12 miles south of Beirut, the scene of an earlier Israeli air raid this week. Beirut Radio said that eight Israeli aircraft had bombed the vicinity of several Lebanese towns in the south and that heavy casualties were reported from the area.
