An army colonel was killed and other military personnel travelling with him injured today when a terrorist explosive
device went off under their vehicle at Rafiah, south of Gaza, Israel Television reported tonight. The dead man was the military commander of the Rafiah area, Eli Shahak, the television said. The TV added this was the first fatal terrorist attack against Israel Defense Force personnel in the Rafiah area since the early 1970s and the military authorities regarded it as extremely serious.
