Energy Minister Marc Lalonde announced yesterday that Egypt and Canada will sign an agreement for peaceful nuclear cooperation, paving the way for future sales of Canadian nuclear reactors to Egypt. The formal signing of the accord later this month will end a process that was started when Lalonde visited Cairo four months ago and signed a preliminary statement on nuclear cooperation with Egypt.

That statement, signed January 10, was the first indication that the Canadian government had reversed its long-standing ban against selling nuclear technology to Middle East countries. Details of the agreement will not be released until after the signing of the agreement by Egyptian Energy Minister Mohammed Maher Abaza and Lalonde in Ottawa.
