Aguda Threatens Religious Boycott of El Al over High Holy Days if Sabbath Flights Continue

The Agudat Israel Party has threatened to impose a religious boycott of El Al over the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur holiday season if the national airlines does not halt all Sabbath flights by September I.

The threat was underlined today by the announcement by the Aguda that party leader Menachem Porush, a Knesset member who usually flies by El Al, had left the country aboard a foreign airline today. The Aguda has been protesting the action of El Al workers last week who prevented Aguda members from entering the airport and thus forcing them to miss their flights.

El Al director Yitzhak Shander said today the halting of Saturday flights would cause direct losses to the airline of some $200 million, with the additional loss of another $150 million to the country’s economy.
