Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir said yesterday that Israel harbored no hostile intentions toward Jordan and that none were implied when Israeli leaders refer to Jordan as the “Palestinian state.”

According to Shamir, such remarks were merely a statement of a geographical and demographic fact, in Israel’s view. He was responding to a comment by visiting Norwegian Foreign Minister Svenn Stray that Amman was apprehensive about Israel’s intentions toward the Hashemite Kingdom. He told Stray that Israel hoped that Jordan would join the peace process within the framework of the Camp David agreements.
