The Satmar Rebbe, Rabbi Moishe Teitelbaum, arrived in Israel yesterday on his first visit since becoming head of the Hasidic movement. He came to be proclaimed officially as the Rebbe of the Satmar Hasidim, both in Israel and abroad. He arrived with an entourage of 200.

Among the group of an estimated 20,000 followers who waited for him near the Mandelbaum gate were some who made a special trip to Jerusalem to witness the event. He had been scheduled to bless a large group of boys but by the time his car arrived at the gate, his followers became so frenzied by his presence he could not get out of his black Cadillac sedan. Surrounded by a wall of police, he and his entourage were led to Shabbos Square in the Mea Shearim quarter where he officially assumed his title.
