Israel Defense Force units went into action today with artillery and tank fire east of Beirut in an effort to stop the heavy shelling by Druze on Christian positions near the Presidential residence on the outskirts of the Lebanese capital. Five Lebanese civilians were reported killed and 10 wounded in the exchanges between the Druze and Christian forces.

Meanwhile, Israeli positions and patrols came under fire as a result of the continuing fighting between the Christians and Druze over the past few days. There were no Israeli casualties. Israeli forces shot and killed a terrorist after he had fired two Katyusha rockets at an Israeli position north of Tyre last night, the army spokesman said.
