Former President Jimmy Carter has listed three concessions he believes Israel must make to achieve peace in the Middle East. In a television interview today with the New York correspondent of the Dutch NCRV broadcasting company, Carter called for Israel’s complete withdrawal from Lebanon, adding that Syria must do the same.
Secondly, Carter said, Israel must be willing to carry out in good faith, the granting of autonomy to the people of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Third, it must stop establishing Jewish settlements in the West Bank, Carter said.
Asked if he saw much chance for peace to materialize in the Middle East, the former President said that the experience of past history made this not very likely. Nevertheless, he said, in his travels since leaving office he has found “an underlying burning desire for peace among all peoples in the Middle East.”
