Hebrew University scientists have developed a new preparation for treatment of the type of herpes that infects the mouth and nasal regions. It contains natural ingredients already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The anti-viral agent, IDU, incorporated in the new preparation was found to be more effective than other preparations currently in use for the treatment of cold sores. It permits better contact with the skin and mucuous membranes, has a cooling, soothing effect and a pleasant taste.
Prof. Ruth Segal, who helped develope the new medication, believes it may prove effective in the treatment of genital herpes. The Yissum Research Development Co. of the Hebrew University is seeking financial support for further research.
