Rabbi Bernard Bergman, a one-time prominent leader of the Orthordox Jewish community who served eight months of a one year prison sentence in connection with nursing home scandals in 1975, died at Mt. Sinai Hospital here on June 16 after a short illness. He was 73.
Bergman’s death, not announced by his family, was confirmed to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency by Mizrachi, the Religious Zionists of America, of which Bergman once served as president. He also had been president of the World Mizrachi Organization. His body was flown to Israel for burial and was interred at Petach Tikva.
Bergman was convicted for offering bribes to former New York State Assemblyman Albert Blumenthal. He and his son, Stanley, were indicted in 1975 by the then Special Nursing Home Prosecutor, Charles Hynes on state and federal charges of Medicaid fraud. He pleaded guilty to part of the indictment and agreed to repay $2.5 million, in exchange for which the indictment against his son was dropped.
