Arabsat, the first Arab telecommunications satellite, was launched last week from a space center in French Guiana. It will provide telephone, telex, television and radio transmissions for the 22 member-states of the Arab League. The official Saudi news agency described Arabsat as the first of three Arab satellites built by a consortium headed by the French company, Aerospatiale. The second is to be launched by the U.S. space shuttle later this year and the third will be held in reserve. The satellite’s main control and command center is located in Dirab, Saudi Arabia.
