Blast Injures Five Persons in Haifa

Five people were injured in the first of two almost simultaneous explosions in downtown Haifa today. The first blast went off under a vegetable stand in what is known as the Turkish market. The owner of the stall was one of the injured. The market was crowded with pre-holiday shoppers at the time.

The explosive charge had been hidden in a plastic bag. Police complained that the netting which stall owners have been instructed to place beneath and around their stalls to prevent such explosives from being placed there, had been faulty.

While police were investigating the market blast, another explosion went off in a nearby small public garden, but caused neither casualties nor damages.

Police detained several score people for questioning in the market incident. Most of the detainees are West Bank Arabs who gather near the market seeking work in Israel.

The two explosions went off some distance from where Esther and Reuven Paltsur, murdered in the Larnaca, Cyprus yacht attack last Wednesday, were being buried in the new Haifa cemetery. The dead couple’s four children and thousands of friends and neighbors attended the funeral. The third murder victim in the Yom Kippur day tragedy, Avraham Avneri, was buried Friday in his home town of Arad.
