The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra has cancelled a concert tour of Poland next month because it conflicts with an earlier commitment to play here at the Artur Rubinstein International Piano Competition, the IPO’s Musical Director, Zubin Mehta, told a press conference Sunday.
The Indian-born Mehta had been invited to conduct in Warsaw. He insisted that he would appear only with the IPO but the dates clashed and alternative arrangements could not be made. Mehta said he hoped the IPO could visit Poland at a later date.
He angrily denied reports that had the IPO gone to Poland, it planned a concert of liturgical music at the site of the Auschwitz death camp.
