Israel’s war-by-posters has spread from Jerusalem’s Orthodox Mea Shearim quarter to B’nai B’rak, another major center of Orthodox Jewry in Israel not far from Tel Aviv.
Yeshiva students in B’nai B’rak have started a campaign like that of the Orthodox Mea Shearim residents, who have been defacing and even burning down bus shelters plastered with large posters, particularly of partly unclothed women in bathing suits.
Several hundred B’nai B’rak black-garbed Orthodox students demonstrated Sunday in front of the Aboudi advertising agency, located in B’nai B’rak, calling Israel’s media “leftists” and “Nazis” and blaming them for the disputed advertisements.
The Orthodox demonstrators attacked two local radio stations and Israel Defense Force radio station reporters, and tried to burn a garbage can. They were stopped by police who made no arrests.
Passers-by have reported that the Orthodox attack on posters with spray-paint defacement has spread even to advertisements of mayonnaise jars, apparently a protest against a poster media firm which has a contract to build and maintain covered and lighted bus shelters throughout Israel, in return for the right to post billboard displays on the shelters.
