Arab nations Tuesday requested an urgent meeting of the Security Council to discuss the continued disorders in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
Members of the Security Council were scheduled to hold consultations Tuesday evening, and diplomats here said that they expect that the 15-member council will meet formally Wednesday.
Diplomats here noted that the Arabs want to convene the council Wednesday to coincide with Land Day, a Palestinian day of protest marking the 12th anniversary of the expropriation of Arab lands in Galilee.
Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar met Tuesday with members of an Arab ministerial committee on the occupied territories, headed by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Taleb Ibrahimi. Other members of the Arab delegation were Saudi Minister of State Ibrahim Massoud, Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara, Arab League Secretary General Chedli Klibi and Farouk Kaddoumi, head of the PLO’s political department.
Following the meeting with Perez de Cuellar, Clovis Maksoud, the Arab League representative here, said that the delegation urged the secretary general to undertake a new mission to the territories, similar to the trip Undersecretary General Marrack Goulding took in January to examine the situation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
