Foreign Minister Sosuke Uno of Japan has written to Premier Yitzhak Shamir, thanking him for “the warmest hospitality extended to me and my delegation during our recent visit to your country.”
Uno, the first Japanese Cabinet minister to visit Israel, was here June 26 on a one-day visit. His letter, received at the beginning of July, was made public Tuesday.
Uno, who visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, wrote that he had been moved “to face the past tragedy of the Jewish people and felt the importance of its meaning to mankind.”
He was also “deeply impressed by the development achieved in your country since its independence 40 years ago.”
Uno said he considered the talks he had in Jerusalem “most beneficial for further political dialogues between our two countries.” He ended his letter with wishes for peace in the region.
