A 12-year-old Palestinian child was killed Sunday during a clash with the Israel Defense Force in Idna village, near Hebron, in the West Bank.
Military sources confirmed that the IDF was engaged in an operation inside the village. They claimed the soldiers were confronted by “violent resistance.”
The exact circumstances of the child’s death were not explained.
The IDF has been conducting pre-emptive raids almost daily on villages thought to harbor Palestinian activists.
Over the weekend, they included the town of Beit Sahur, certain neighborhoods in Bethlehem and the nearby Dehaishe refugee camp.
Dozens of arrests were made. Beit Sahur was placed under curfew Sunday morning and searched. Ten arrests were reported.
There were sporadic strikes in the territories over the weekend to protest the deportation of eight Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip to Lebanon on June 29.
While the intifada continues unabated, the civil administration is trying to get a dialogue going with Palestinians. Gen. Shaike Erez met Sunday with several local leaders in Hebron.
When the government-proposed peace plan was raised, the Arabs pointed suggestively to the west, indicating the subject should be raised with the Palestine Liberation Organization, headed by Yasir Arafat, which has its headquarters in Tunis.
Meanwhile, the underground leadership of the uprising issued Leaflet No. 42, which exhorts Palestinians to resist the peace plan, which, among other things, calls for elections in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
