Israeli air force jets attacked installations of the Islamic fundamentalist Hezbollah, or Party of God, in southern Lebanon Sunday evening and returned safely to their bases, a military spokesperson said.

It was the first raid on the pro-Iranian Shiite extremists since Israeli commandos captured one of their top leaders, Sheikh Abdul Karim Obeid, from his home in Lebanon on July 28.

According to the spokesperson, the targets served as Hezbollah headquarters. They were located in the Ein Abusawar region, near Nabatiya, about 12 miles south of the port of Sidon.

Sunday’s air strike may have been in retaliation for an Aug. 9 truck-bomb attack in southern Lebanon that wounded five Israeli soldiers and a South Lebanon Army militiaman.
