The first fiber optic communications cable in the eastern Mediterranean, which will carry 19,000 telephone conversations simultaneously before the end o this year, is currently being laid from Tel Aviv t Palermo, Sicily.
The Vercors, a French cable-laying vessel chartered by the Eastern Mediterranean Optic; System, put ashore the Israeli end of the cab last week at a point opposite the Dan Hotel in Tel Aviv.
The cable is made of state-of-the-art, hair thin light-transmission wires, encased in sever centimeters of shark- and weather-resistant metal coverings.
