Four Israelis are reported to be among 43 members of an international mountain-climbing group feared killed b an avalanche in the snow-covered Pamir Mountain of Soviet Central Asia.
The avalanche apparently was triggered last Friday by a minor earthquake at their base camp on Lenin Peak, the Soviet Union’s third-highest mountain.
he group was assembled for the ascent the 23,400-foot-high mountain, when the anti camp was swept away by the snowslide. There w said to be little chance of their remaining alive.
The accident was described by the Soviet: news agency Tass as one of the worst in Soviet mountain-climbing history.
