Israel is pondering what to do with a horse, apparently property of the Jordanian royal family, that staggered onto the beach at Eilat on Tuesday morning fully saddled, after an exhausting swim from the direction of the seaside town of Aqaba in Jordan.

The gray gelding was believed to be a fugitive from King Hussein’s royal stables on the outskirts of Aqaba.

Some vacationers, surprised by its sudden appearance out of the sea, swore they saw the Hashemite royal insignia branded on its rump. But police who led the tired, limping beast away, said there were no distinguishing marks.

The authorities were trying to establish ownership when an announcement came from Amman that Crown Prince Hassan was thrown from his horse while riding along the beach near the vacation palace outside Aqaba. The horse bolted into the sea, the announcement said.
