The head of Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic intelligence agency, has decided to resign from his post in March after seven years of service.

The retiring official, whose name is not made public for security reasons, last week informed Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of his intentions. The official also recommended that his deputy succeed him.

He had reportedly wanted to leave his post earlier, but had stayed on for several months at the request of the prime minister.

The Israeli daily Ha’aretz quoted security sources as saying that under its current head, Shin Bet – a Hebrew acronym that translates as General Security Services – had advanced its war against terrorism.

The sources said that under him, new working methods had been introduced and effective fieldwork had prevented many terror attacks.

Ha’aretz also reported that the Shin Bet official recently concluded a three- month leave of absence to pursue studies at Harvard University.
