President Ezer Weizman has reduced the jail terms of nine prisoners serving life sentences, including Yona Avrushmi, who was convicted of second degree murder for the death of Emile Grunzweig at a protest.
Avrushmi had thrown a grenade at Peace Now protesters, who were demonstrating outside the Prime Ministers’ Office in Jerusalem against the 1982 war in Lebanon. Grunzweig, one of the demonstrators, was killed and several others were injured.
Avrushmi was among four prisoners whose life terms were commuted to 27 years. Another five prisoners had their sentences reduced to 30 years.
The president made the decision on the recommendation of Justice Minister David Libai. Weizman and Libai agreed to meet again to discuss other life-term cases.
