Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics said some 18,000 new immigrants arrived in the country during the first three months of 1995, a 10 percent increase over the same period last year.

About 86 percent of the new immigrants came from the former Soviet Union, the bureau said last week.

Some 27 percent of the new immigrants held scientific or academic positions before arriving in Israel; about 21 percent were skilled or unskilled laborers, with background in industry, transportation and construction.
