Israel and Jordan have signed the last four bilateral agreements as set out under the October 1994 peace treaty between the two countries.

The agreements, signed Thursday in Aqaba and Eilat, cover cooperation in the areas of science, culture and communications.

One agreement creates a framework for transforming the Aqaba=Eilat region into a single district for cooperation in the fields of tourism, industry, trade, environment and infrastructure.

Another determines the maritime border between the countries.

The signing ceremony was a festive event and was carried live by Jordanian television.

The agreements signed were among some 18 agreements affixed to the peace accord.

During the last few months, agreements have been signed on tourism, border crossings, energy, health, environment, police, trade and economic cooperation, agriculture, transportation and civil aviation.

Three permanent working groups will continue to operate in the future on the issues of Jordan Valley development, water and the areas of Tsofar and Naharayim, where Jordan leased back to Israel land returned to it under the peace accord.

After Thursday’s signing ceremony, Prime Minister Shimon Peres was to host Crown Prince Hassan at an official dinner in Eilat.
