The new commander of the Israeli navy said this week that Israel had a moral obligation to learn about the fate of the Dakar submarine, which disappeared 28 years ago with its crew of 69.

Rear Adm. Alex Alone made the comment at the annual state ceremony – held at Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl Cemetery – for the Dakar crew.

In January 1968, the submarine disappeared in rough weather after leaving England.

Efforts to determine what happened to the submarine were unsuccessful. In February 1968, the sailors were declared missing.
