Germany’s two main intelligence agencies have issued warnings of possible attacks by Hezbollah militants operating in the country.
German authorities believe that Iranian and Hezbollah activists are planning a bombing campaign against Israeli, American and possibly German targets.
As a result of recent threats by Hezbollah, security was beefed up at the Israeli Embassy in Bonn.
The Munich-based Counter-Espionage Service and the Cologne-based Internal Security Service issued the warnings Monday, saying that they came as the result of an investigation into a cache of explosives found last month on a Iranian ship in Antwerp, Belgium.
The explosives included highly sophisticated mortars that could penetrate bullet-proof glass from a distance of more than 100 feet.
Luggage containing the explosives was addressed to an Iranian living in Munich.
The Iranian and two others who were arrested aboard the ship have been deported to Iran.
In a related development, the German newsmagazine Focus reported last week that activists with the Islamic fundamentalist Hamas movement are operating in Berlin and Aachen, which is located on Germany’s border with Belgium.
