Israel and the United States reportedly reached a new understanding on the release of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Certain actions by Israel may induce the United States to reconsider the situation of Pollard, who is serving a life sentence for spying for Israel, the Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported.

The Pollard case was raised during a meeting with President Clinton when Prime Minister Shimon Peres visited Washington this week, the paper reported.

Peres and other Israeli officials would not comment on the report.

During his visit to Washington in December, shortly after Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination, Peres asked Clinton to pardon Pollard, a former U.S. naval intelligence analyst who was arrested in the United States in 1985 and sentenced in 1987 to life imprisonment.

Rabin also raised the issue in his meetings with Clinton.

Pollard, who has served 10 years of his sentence, is eligible to request an early release from a parole committee appointed by the president.
