Recently translated relics are challenging the view of a people presented as heathens in the Old Testament. Some scholars say that a find including some 57 inscribed tablets indicates that the Canaanites, a symbol of evil and decadence in the Torah, were a wealthy and sophisticated people whose religious traditions resembled those of the Israelites.
