The first Jewish sheriff in the 148-year history of Los Angeles County, died Oct. 29 of a massive brain hemorrhage at the age of 74. Head of the nation’s largest county law enforcement agency for 16 years, Sherman Block was also the highest paid elected official in the United States, with an annual salary of $234,000, versus President Clinton’s $200,000.
