A Knesset committee postponed votes by the full Israeli legislature on a bill to block the appointment of Reform and Conservative representatives to local religious councils. The bill, which already passed the first of three Knesset votes, was initiated to counter a recent Supreme Court ruling ordering the appointment of non-Orthodox representatives to the councils. In a related development, the chairman of the Knesset’s Law Committee plans to ask the Supreme Court to postpone until after the national elections hearing an appeal of a lower court’s ruling recognizing conversions performed by Conservative and Reform rabbis.
