Hillary Rodham Clinton defended her delay in responding to Suha Arafat’s comments last week that Israel had used poison gas to pollute the water and land of the West Bank. The first lady said she did not respond right away because the remarks, made in her presence, were not as harsh in the English translation that she heard. Clinton has come under fire for her failure to immediately denounce Arafat’s remarks.
