The Israeli army exchanged fire with Palestinian gunmen in the southern Gaza Strip. In what was otherwise a relatively peaceful day in the West Bank and Gaza, the Palestinians threw at least 50 hand grenades at the soldiers during the fighting, the army said. Palestinian police denied that any grenades had been thrown.
