A Belgian court heard arguments about whether Ariel Sharon should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. The Israeli prime minister faces lawsuits filed by Palestinians and Lebanese accusing him of responsibility for the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacre in Lebanon, which was carried out by Lebanese Christian militias allied with Israel. Lawyers for Sharon argued Wednesday that the case was launched in an effort to smear Israel, not to seek justice for the massacre victims.
