Ariel Sharon said he approved recent high-level contacts with the Palestinians. In a joint statement with Foreign Minister Shimon Peres on Monday, the Israeli prime minister said he agreed to Peres’ contacts with top Palestinian officials. The aim of the talks, the statement said, was to bring a halt to terrorism and then work toward resuming diplomatic negotiations.
